The Lowry

"The detectives (Frazer Hines and John Bulleid) are introduced surprisingly late...but brighten events nicely with some humour and a fixation with scullery maids..."

"Bill Kenwright’s production is sure to impress even the most diminutive Christie fan."

True West.

This was performed at the Stratsmann Theatre in Essen, Germany. It was also performed at various schools in Northern Germany, and finally at The Cockpit Theatre in London. John was Production manager for the London performances, as well as playing Austin. Below are the excerpts from the translated reviews from Germany:

Dorsten newspaper: “Different brothers spell bind Dorsten audience”

"Thrilling play by Sam Shepard. Everything could be so perfect: there is Austin, a successful playwright, house-sitting his mother’s apartment and hoping to sell his script to a Hollywood film-producer...It was performed in its native language, English as the play is on the curriculum for centralised A-levels in Nordrhein Westfalen, many students were in the 150 strong audience.

... John Bulleid (Austin) achieved the artistic coup to bring light to the many facets of his character. "

NRZ-Essen Newspaper : Brothers caught in psychological duel

"...A desk, a sink and a fridge frame the confined space in which the drama between the brothers evolves around dreams, family ties and failed hopes

...John Bulleid (Austin) plays the inhibited intellectual with a rich portion of self-irony."

Waz-Essen Newspaper: Violence between brothers.

"...John Bulleid (Austin) and Matthew Gammie (Lee) create the changes within the characters in an excellent way, also pointing out Sam Shepard’s black humour and the sarcasm so that despite the drastic plot the audience can enjoy the comic relief that the scenes offer from time to time..."

Vreden Newspaper: Decay enchants young audience.

"Chaos filled the entire stage. At the end it was drowned in stolen toasters, empty bottles and paper...And yet the beginning of Sam Shepard’s play was so neat: The screen writer Austin sits in his mother’s flat in sunny California and types his new ‘project’ into the typewriter. Austin is the typical sunny-boy with black curls, nice and polite. This attitude he tries to preserve towards his brother Lee, who suddenly appears uninvited...

The situation changes and this was something John Bulleid as Austin embodied brilliantly. Austin transforms in a crass, drastic way which is in contrast to the now trying to be civilised Lee...Austin is mutated into an angry and cynical Toaster-stealer and drinker..."
